Did they alter the rigidity (ie ruin) of the body before racing or is this a perfect demonstration of why older vehicles aren’t as safe as newer vehicles?

Removing the larger portion of interior fittings both weakens it structurally and gets most anything that would have absorbed energy out of the car. They might strategically create weak points to fold the metal into a more useful barrier as well.
